An Intelligent ThrillerWell written and smart, this thriller by Abrahams is full of twists and mystery. I couldn't stop reading but am not surprised. It's the 3rd by this writer that I've read, each of them 5 stars. Its a little hard to get into at the beginning but once the government investigator with the impossible name shows up it's easier. For a fun read, he can't be beat.
I will never prefer this author's hardcore mystery/suspense over the Chet and Bernie books, but this is still a competent and well-written thriller. I figured out most of the story about 2/3 of the way through, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the book. Well worth a read.
This book was exactly what I needed at the moment - a quick, easy read. I enjoyed the suspense, even though I pretty much figured out the ending by the time I was about half way done. Recommend to anyone who likes mystyer/suspense novels.
About half way through the book, I figured out the mystery, but I didn't have any idea how it was all going to play out. Very good book, I definitely want to read more by this author.
Hard Rain is a nail-biter of a suspense novel, part mystery and part espionage thriller, and Peter Abrahams is a writer with credentials as long as your arm, including being Stephen King’s favorite American suspense novelist. After reading this skillfully woven tale I can see why. My thanks go to Net Galley and Open Road Integrated Media for the free galley. It was one wild ride!Hard Rain is set in the period after Vietnam, but prior to the time when satellites revolutionized our means of commun...
"Jessie felt along the wall until she came to a switch. She flicked it. Nothing happened. She moved along the hall and tried the next switch she came to. Again nothing happened, except her fingers got wet. She tried a few more switches and gave up. Slowly she made her way past rooms once overflowing with the barn painters and their music, now full of shadows, to the kitchen. She smelled burned sugar. The kitchen lights were out too. Jessie felt through drawers until she found a box of wooden mat...
I got this book and Pressure Drop from the library at the same time. I started reading this one because it looked like it had the best plot. On page 55 I decided I was feeling kind of disgusted with this book. I picked up Pressure Drop hoping it was better. It was. So much better.I returned to hard rain hoping that it will get better. It did not. So much worse.Starts out as very interesting tale and then turns into something kind of ugly. There's no other way to describe it. Shortly after this t...
Jessie's ex-husband is late returning their daughter at the end of the weekend. First she is annoyed and then terrified when they don't show up. The police are not concerned and think it is some custody battle or that he is on a drug bender. Jessie finds some clues at his house and follows them from California to Vermont, where he grew up. Soon she learns that much of the past he told her about was a lie and that something bad happened at the Woodstock Festival. She meets a secret agent who is o...
This was a book that had been sitting unread on my shelf for a very long time. It was a good mystery/thriller with interesting characters. A relatively quick read with a good plot and enough twists to keep you wondering until the end. It was a bit confusing at the start as you are just thrown into the story without much set up. Overall, I would recommend it.
I liked this. Unexpected grit from my favorite feel-good mystery writer!
I just can't get into this book.

I enjoyed it, though not as much as I usually enjoy Abrahams' books. Some nice twists and turns, and I could definitely feel the angst of Jessie's character.
More twists than a pretzelVery enjoyable read. The plot twists were unexpected and I thought the characters were well developed. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
This is the first book I read by Peter Abrahams and it is still my favorite.
Framed...No spoilers: 4 stars for this mystery. I've read many books by this author... most of them excellent stories...This mystery starts out in late 1960s Thailand where POW Bao Dai has been captured by the merciless Corporal Trinh who has perfected his torture techniques...Bao manages to kill Trinh and escape... while still in Bangkok, Bao kills an American businessman, steals his I.D. and goes to America...Meanwhile in California, Jessie is expecting her daughter Kate to be dropped off from...
Jessie Shapiro's ex-husband. Pat, takes her daughter Katie for a weekend visit but does not bring her home. Jessie cannot contact Pat, so she goes to his home and finds that things don't look right. For example, there is a note on his blackboard that says "Toi giet la toi", Katie's new athletic shoes are in her room, and Katie's book that she is never without is still there. The plot gets much more strange. It is interesting but sometimes hard to follow as different (various and odd characters c...
